Hindu Culture, Tradition and Youth
The Hindu religion, being the oldest in the world, has given birth to a
civilization with its rich tradition & culture spanning thousands of
years, that has remained virtually unbroken and unchanged in spite of the
onslaught of invasions, colonialism, alien cultures etc. This is primarily
due to the traditions & cultural values being passed on from generation
to generation by individual families & temples. The fact that the younger
generation of today, living in a Western Society, faces greater challenges
today, has necessitated the need to impart culture, tradition, family values
& dharma in the younger generation with greater emphasis than ever
before. With this objective, the Hindu Temple Society of Canada has started
an initiative, called 'Hindu temple Youth Corps' (HTYC) to involve our youth
in all its activities. Some of these are:
1. Opportunities for Youths to volunteer in temple activities:
The temple requires the services of Youths in:
- sorting, counting and packaging of coins collected in the Hundi every week.
- folding & ironing of clothes used on the deities
- cleaning of temple lamps and other utensils
- helping in general cleaning of the temples
- maintenance & running of the library
Community Service Certificates will be issued to volunteers, if required. Contact
Youth corps at youthcorps@thehindutemple.ca for more information.
2. Workshops for children and young adults to learn traditional arts, crafts
& Vedic chanting:
HTYC plans to organize regular classes to teach traditional music &
musical instruments to children and young adults, through professional
teachers. More details will be available in the website shortly.
Vedic chanting classes are being conducted every Sunday between 5 PM and 6
PM at the temple, for children and adults alike.
3. Participation in cultural programs and activities
4. Story/Article Writing Contests
HTYC invites children between the ages of 5 and 16 to write small stories
in English, based on Hindu stories from Puranas/Ramayana/Mahabharatha etc. and submit them to the Youth
Corps. One winning entry will be published in the temple Website every
month, along with the child's profile and photograph. Entries must be received before the 10th of each month.
